Gordon Banks MP meets representatives of Breathe Easy Perthshire
December 2007
Ochil & South Perthshire MP Gordon Banks was in Crieff last week to meet representatives of Breathe Easy Perthshire, a support group of the British Lung Foundation.
The group aims to raise awareness to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) in Perthshire. COPD is an umbrella term for all lung diseases such as emphysema or bronchitis. These diseases are progressive and irreversible, but can be prevented by not smoking. Occupational factors such as coal dust and inherited problems can also cause COPD. A simple lung test and early diagnosis can slow progress and help improve quality of life.
Mr Banks said I am delighted to support the British Lung Foundation and I am glad that we have such a strong team in Perthshire raising awareness to COPD. One person in every seven in the UK is affected by a lung disease and has to live with breathlessness all the time, it is vital therefore that people look after their lungs and raising awareness of this is very important.
Meeting with Joan and her team was very productive and it was encouraging to hear about some of the excellent initiatives being undertaken by the group over the last four years. The British Lung Foundation also recognises their hard work and commitment by awarding the group two awards firstly the best new group and secondly the best group for raising awareness.
This is a fantastic achievement and I would encourage anyone
seeking advice or information to contact my office and my staff will
be happy to pass on the groups details.
