Gordon speaks out on planned Post Office closures in Ochil & South Perthshire

11 April 2008

“I fully appreciate peoples legitimate concerns regarding the effect of the planned Post Office closure programme, but what is essential is that there is something constructive done to alleviate the difficulties.”

“Campaigning to retain every Post Office in my constituency is not a sustainable position unless there is a clear objective of how this can be achieved.”

“Royal Mail have made it clear that individual Post Offices within the closure programme can be reassessed during the consultation process but that this is likely to have knock on effects.”

“Furthermore, complaining about the process taking too long and then wanting it delayed is an unsustainable position, but that has been the SNP position as argued by Ms Cunningham.”

“I have therefore written to Keith Brown MSP, Roseanna Cunningham MSP and John Swinney MSP, in their capacity as MSP’s who represent my constituents at Holyrood, asking them to support me in a campaign to have the Scottish Executive allocate funding either directly, or alternatively indirectly to local authorities, to allow the Post Office network in my constituency to remain intact.”

“I look forward to them joining me in this campaign.”

“I have also written to every Sub Postmaster in Ochil & South Perthshire advising them of my action as well as offering to meet them and discuss the situation, if they so wish.”
