Gordon Banks MP praises Governments commitment to International Volunteering
December 2007
Ochil & South Perthshire MP has spoken out about the Governments commitment to provide support to civil society organisations working in the International Volunteering Sector such as International Service, Progressio and Skillshare.
The Government provides support to the tune of £28 million each year to these organisations to contribute towards its many volunteering schemes. These groups works with schools, communities as well as adults who are interested in volunteering abroad.
Mr Banks said Well-directed volunteering schemes can have a beneficial local impact and help raise public awareness of development issues, be it HIV/AIDS or access to clear water supply.
The Government, through its Department for International Development, will be increasing its efforts in this area in the coming months. The Government will be launching 2 new volunteering initiatives: Youth Volunteering and Diaspora Volunteering.
Volunteering will engage young people and get them directly involved in poverty reduction schemes and to pass on their experience to their peers and within their communities.
If you would like more information on these important new schemes,
then please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. I would be happy
to provide further information on how interested constituents could
get involved in such schemes.
