Local MP voices disappointment at Carlsberg decision to close Alloa site

18 January 2008

Ochil & South Perthshire MP Gordon Banks has spoken out at the disappointing news that Carlsberg UK have announced proposals to shut their Alloa depot, possibly as early as August 2008.

Mr Banks said – “It is most disappointing that Carlsberg UK have come to this conclusion and especially so at a time when Clackmannanshire is on the up. Improvements in Transport and Infrastructure should be positives in the business of any supply chain and I would have hoped that Carlsberg UK would have wanted to continue the long relationship of it, and it’s predecessors, with Clackmannanshire.”

“Nationally and locally, employment figures are on the rise and the UK economy is stable. Therefore these job losses come along against a backdrop of economic prosperity in the UK and also at a time when, from all accounts, Carlsberg continues to grow. I have no doubt that this growth is down in large part to the hard work and endeavour of the staff at Alloa.”

“I also remain puzzled at the alleged ‘consultation’ period and I truly hope that this is a genuine consultation and not merely a discussion with a pre-determined outcome.”

“I’m surprised that Carlsberg have decided not to engage with the local authority and elected representatives and I will be actively seeking a meeting with Carlsberg management in order to see how best we can move forward but we are now in a difficult position due to the lack of prior notitfication.”

Mr Banks also took issue with the statement issued by Carlsberg UK –

“Carlsberg UK have said the reason for the closure is escalating inflation, however everyone knows that inflation is static. Hopefully the real reasons for the closure will emerge soon and I trust the company wont hide behind excuses.”

Mr Banks also had a meeting today with David Cairns MP, Minister of State at the Scotland Office on the issue.

Mr Cairns said – “The proposed loss of jobs in Alloa is regrettable and the Government will always maintain a commitment to help those people unfortunate enough to be caught up in situations like this.”

“I was pleased to be able to discuss the issue with local MP Gordon Banks today and he is absolutely committed to working with Carlsberg staff and management to look at possible ways to safeguard the workers future."
