Gordon Banks reacts to Sainsbury consultation in Crieff
28 April 2008
Local MP Gordon Banks has welcomed supermarket chain Sainsbury’s recent announcement to consult on a new Supermarket store in Crieff and the relocation of Crieff Highland Gathering.
A public exhibition is being held where the plans will be outlined in detail and representatives from Sainsbury’s will be on hand to answer questions. Members of the community are invited to come along and visit the exhibition at the Crieff Hotel, East High Street, Crieff, on Friday 9th May between 1pm and 7pm and Saturday 10th May between 10am and 2pm.
Mr. Banks said –
“I am glad that Sainsbury’s have decided to come forward and engage with the local community. It is important that the people of Crieff are able to have their say on the town’s future. I have no doubt the event will be a success, much like the last consultation day, and will provide local residents the opportunity to ask questions about the proposals.”
“Sainsbury’s have already said that they want to be ‘good neighbours’ and to work productively with local residents as well as providing around 200 new jobs. This will be a relationship which will benefit the supermarket, but more importantly the people of Crieff who want improved choice and quality in their foods.”
“The future is looking bright for Crieff with a new, good quality supermarket in the pipeline and the spin off of this - the development of a new sports facility which will host Crieff Highland Gathering but also benefit several local sports teams.”
“I hope to go along at some point to meet Sainsbury’s representatives but to also hear what members of the community think of the proposals.”
The proposals put forward by Sainsbury’s include:
- 20,000 sq ft sales food store, selling the full range of Sainsbury’s food products
- 315 space car park, including disabled and mother & child parking and spaces to serve the Town Centre
- Extensive landscaping around the site
- Construction of a new stone wall along Broich Road
In addition, the development will provide the Gathering with funds for the construction of the new purpose-built facilities for the Highland Games on Broich Road
It is proposed that the new Games Ground would have:
- A new grandstand pavilion
- A new full sized football pitch sports area
- Function facilities
Sporting facilities for local Crieff football teams
